Spotting the signs

Men often show they’re struggling through changes in behaviour rather than words. You might notice someone:

  • withdrawing from friends, family or things they used to enjoy
  • drinking, gambling or using drugs more than usual
  • sleeping much more or much less
  • seeming angry, irritable or on edge
  • talking about feeling trapped, a burden, or that there’s no point
  • giving things away or putting their affairs in order

None of these mean something is definitely wrong, but they’re a reason to check in. COPY TO CONFIRM

Starting the conversation

You don’t need the perfect words. Showing up matters more than what you say.

  • Pick a side-by-side moment: a walk, a drive, a game. It can feel easier than face to face.
  • Ask twice. “How are you really doing?” often gets a different answer.
  • Listen more than you talk, and don’t rush to fix it.
  • If you’re worried about their safety, ask directly whether they’re thinking about suicide. Asking does not put the idea in their head.
  • Agree a next step together, and check in again.
