The first message took me three weeks to send

Dan, 34, put off starting therapy because he didn’t know what he’d say. Here’s what the first session was actually like.

I had the BetterHelp link open on my phone for three weeks. I’d look at it on the train, close it, open it again at night. Not because I didn’t want help. Because I didn’t know what I’d say once someone asked me what was wrong.

What I thought would happen

I assumed there would be a form, a diagnosis, a label. I assumed I’d need to explain everything in order. I assumed the therapist would be disappointed that it wasn’t anything dramatic.

You don’t need the right words. You need to show up once. The words come after.

What actually happened

The first session was a conversation. She asked what had made me reach out now, rather than last year. I didn’t have a tidy answer and that was fine. By the end of it I had one thing to try that week, and a time for the next session. That was it.

Six sessions in, the main difference is that things don’t build up for as long. I notice earlier. That’s what HUMEN means when it says prevention before crisis, and I didn’t understand that until I was inside it.
